Dimethylglycine (DMG) is an amino acid, a building block for protein produced and found only in very small amounts in the canine body. According to holistic veterinarian and exotic pet expert Dr. Margaret A. Wissman, DMG “provides useful building units for biosynthesis of vitamins, hormones, neurotransmitters, antibodies, nucleic acids and other metabolically active molecules.”
Dr. Wissman believes that DMG can be used effectively in dogs with a number of health problems including neurological disorders, cardiovascular problems, diabetes mellitus, autoimmune disorders, allergies, liver disease, respiratory issues, cancer and tumors. Cancer Fighter — In a 2000 paper published by FoodScience Corp., Dr. John Lawson of Clemson University discovered that rabbits given DMG after injections of typhoid or influenza produced four times the number of natural anti-bodies needed to fight the diseases compared to the group of control rabbits not given the DMG. The same group of patients showed a 3 to 9 times greater increase in their T-cell count.
T-cells are the type of white blood cells that play a major role in cell-mediated immunity, the immunity needed to ward off various auto-immune diseases and cancers, including (in humans) the AIDS virus. DMG also doubled the body’s ability to produce interferon, a product of lymphocytes, that enhances the immunity to infections and kills cancer cells.
A study on mice using DMG against the antigen causing melanoma, a highly metastatic form of skin cancer, found that none of the mice given DMG grew primary tumors. Seventy percent of the mice not given the amino acid developed melanoma tumors.
Oxygen Utilization – Oxygen, as well as other chemicals and nutrients, is transported in and out of body cells on a regular basis. How well an oxygen molecule is used by the body can be mediated by a number of factors, including the age and condition of the cellular walls, the ability of the immune system to function properly, and the overall health of the body in question.
An early study published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases by Dr. C. D. Graber, et al. of the University of Southern California found that, when given DMG after an injection of pokeweed allergens, 20 human study subjects increased their antibody response fourfold as compared to the immunity response given the vaccinated control group. He stated that DMG presumably “enhances oxygen utilization by tissue and effectively complexes free radicals.”
In his book How to Boost Your Immune System, author Gary Singh states that, “Sublingual DMG is probably a more effective methyl donor than oral TMG or or DMG. Increased oxygen utilization inside the cells can inactivate intracellular viruses, fungus and bacteria. Folic acid supports an enzyme that breaks down DMG and the breakdown products are likely where the benefits reside. Folic acid supports the process.”
Exercise Recovery – Two studies in the Journal of Animal Science ten years apart, purported to show that the application of DMG on Thoroughbred horses after a strenuous workup lessened the effects of the lactic acid buildup that causes muscle soreness, thus shortening the time for exercise recovery.
While the earlier study stated that the administration of DMG produced no significant differences in the measured values of carbon dioxide production (VCO2), heart rate, arterial blood and plasma lactate concentrations, arterial blood gases and pH, the latter experiment deduced that plasma lactate (lactic acid) levels were lower in untrained horses given DMG than were the levels of the control group of trained horses.
This theory could lead dog owners and trainers to determine that a less-fit animal would be more apt to find DMG supplementation beneficial than a well-exercised dog were it not for the fact that DMG is known for its cancer-fighting and immune-stimulating properties.

Creatine is a derivative of the amino acids arginine, glycine, and methionine that is formed in the body’s liver, pancreas and kidneys and aids in muscle’s abilities to produce short, intense bursts of energy. Creatine builds lean body mass by allowing the muscles to work longer and train harder.
A recent research study published in The Journal of Nutrition looked at the energy levels expressed in muscles after supplementing the diets of twelve beagles for 4 weeks with creatine. Creatine levels were also checked in the animal’s blood plasma to determine how much of the creatine was being excreted in urine. The scientists discovered that those animals with little muscle mass prior to the creatine ingestion substantially increased energy levels and mass during the study, with the majority of the increase happening within the first 14 days of the trial. Those animals that were already muscular showed little mass increase, but were able to maintain musculature and up energy levels.
The supplements caused increased levels of creatine to be found in blood plasma with an upsurge in urination leading to more creatine being excreted from the body. The study concluded that more research is needed to expand the awareness of creatine metabolism in dogs.
Lecithin is a type of fatty acid that is a major part of all biological membranes, including those of canines. It plays an essential role in the dog’s neurological, reproductive, and digestive systems and is required for optimal cell metabolism. Lecithin is said to increase brain levels of acetylcholine, an organic chemical normally found in the body that acts as a neurotransmitter, resulting in enhanced memory and learning ability and decreasing the risk of neurological disorders.
Additionally, university studies suggest that lecithin supplementation lowers cholesterol levels by stimulating cholesterol metabolism, thus decreasing the risk for the cardiac disease common in the larger dog breeds.
An article in the Journal of Clinical Investigation studied the excretion rates of bile acid, lecithin and cholesterol in the livers of unanesthetized dogs after the blood circulation was clinically stopped in the organs. Statistics showed that both lecithin output and cholesterol output were directly related to bile acid excretion rate.
This lead the researchers to conclude that digestive health, in the form of decreased excretions of bile acids, increased the ratio of lecithin in the body. Because lecithin molecules have been shown to attach to molecules of cholesterol, the scientists concluded that higher levels of lecithin in the body increase the metabolic rate of cholesterol. This forces cholesterol out of the cellular components of the circulatory system where it tends to gather and cause heart disease.
